Frequently Asked Questions

How does the delay predictor work?
We analyze historical BTS on-time performance data across multiple years to compute the average delay probability for your route, airport, and airline combination in your selected travel month. The prediction reflects seasonal patterns (e.g., winter weather, summer congestion).
How accurate are the predictions?
Predictions are based on 38.3 million historical flights (2020-2025). They reflect long-term seasonal averages and are most reliable for high-volume routes. Individual flights can vary based on weather, staffing, and other real-time factors.
What does the on-time percentage mean?
A flight is considered "on-time" if it arrives less than 15 minutes after the scheduled arrival time, per BTS definitions. An 85% on-time rate means roughly 1 in 7 flights is delayed more than 15 minutes.

Using this prediction

A seasonal average tells you the odds, not the outcome, of your specific flight.

  • Check the specific airline flying your route; carriers on the same route can have very different reliability. Airline rankings
  • A nonstop itinerary removes connection risk entirely; compare routing options before booking. Choosing reliable routes
  • Look up your departure and arrival airports directly for their own delay-cause breakdown. Browse airports

Predictions reflect historical seasonal averages for the selected route, airport, or airline; they are not a guarantee for any individual flight.

Every figure on PlainFlights is rendered directly from BTS On-Time Performance data, no number is typed in by an editor. This tool queries the selected route's seasonal on-time history live from the dataset; it is a historical average, not a prediction for any specific flight.
